Trust Isn’t a Feeling

We should not entrust our money, time, well-being, and even loved ones to any organization, no matter how reputable, just because it feels right.

Although he’s not my favorite economist, I’m a fan of Steven Levitt, co-author of the Freakonomics Series. “Don’t trust, just verify” is one of his many fascinating and practical admonitions.

Whether it is a garage, home or lawn service, childcare, elder care, schools, youth programs, church, or any other organization you’re considering, you risk negative consequences if you don’t verify before entrusting them with what’s important to you.

An effective notification system required by law to prevent and detect wrongful acts and conditions is the foundation for trusting any organization.

Trust is an organizational leadership responsibility. Most leaders dance around it. But those who embrace it don’t see trust as a one-and-done issue but rather something to be continually nurtured. It becomes a positive and self-sustaining element of organizational culture.

In addition to an effective notification system, organizations that warrant the most trust welcome, facilitate, and respond to confidential feedback.

Look 1st has packages for every organization. Organization leaders doing everything they should to warrant trust should publicize it. The Look 1st Affirm seal will do so now for only 50¢ a month. Organization leaders who want to do more to warrant trust can do so now for less than $10.00 a month. I’d gladly answer any questions, implement your solution, and verify your trustworthiness.

And for the rest of us, it’s time to stop trusting without verification. It’s okay and prudent to ask for verification first.

Protect. Engage. Optimize.
